Modest Mouse – We Were Dead Before the Ship even Sank
Epic Records

For myself, one of the tangibles of a good band is the ability to create a distinct sound that is evolutionary over the course of their career, yet still retains a certain sense of individuality when crossing genres. Modest Mouse is just one example of such a band. Although they are not yet a household name, they are something of Indie legend in that they have broken the mold and moved into semi-mainstream status while retaining their Indie sound.
On this, their fifth full length album, Modest Mouse again does well to evolve their sound but stay true to their roots. Deep funk grooves spliced with in your face vocals and wavering guitars make for an awesome mix. Lyrically, this album does not bring as much as some of the more personal albums from the earlier days of the band, but I think the grand funkiness of it all more than makes up for that. I’m certain that with this album, the crew was looking to explore a ‘dancier’ side, so it’s not like they couldn’t come up with anything or fell flat on their faces lyrically.
All in all, a solid effort from Modest Mouse… grab this album!!!
